A New Beginning for Mirembe

It's been a new beginning for Mirembe Grace!

Meet Mirembe Grace. She lives in Buwudha village in Uganda and is the mother of two young boys, Alex and Kakaire.

When Mirembe was young, she became seriously ill with cerebral malaria. She survived, but the illness affected her ability to learn and care for herself.

Years later, an organization helped her receive treatment and return to school. Mirembe was thrilled. She thought she had finally been given a second chance.

But when she struggled academically, she was dropped from the program.

People called her “dull” and “mad.” They told her she would amount to nothing.

More hardship followed. Mirembe married and had her first son, but after her mother-in-law learned about her past illness, Mirembe says she was mistreated. Eventually, she returned to her parents' home.

Soon she was raising two children with no education, no job, and no way to earn an income of her own.

Then another door opened.

A friend told Mirembe about CLP's Girls' Vocational Center.

“Come, we'll learn a skill,” she told Mirembe.

This time, Mirembe didn't have to pass an exam to be given an opportunity.

There was no judgment about what she couldn't do.

She was welcomed.

Today, Mirembe is learning tailoring and already making bags and reusable pads that she can sell to earn income.

For a woman who was told she would amount to nothing, that opportunity matters.

Her story is still being written.
