A Classroom Without Borders
Thanks to students in Vermont, these children now have new school supplies!
There was a lot of excitement in Busikwe village recently when some of the children there “traveled” all the way to Vermont without ever leaving home.
Fifth-grade students at Hinesburg Community School and Charlotte Central School joined children from Busikwe for a virtual visit that went beyond a simple video call. This time, the U.S. students were invited into daily life in the village.
Grandmother Silvia and her granddaughter Milley welcomed everyone into their compound, giving a tour of their traditional home, the sleeping area, the separate kitchen building, and the surrounding gardens. With Vermont buried in snow, the students especially loved seeing the lush greenery on the screen.
For many of the children in Busikwe, this was their first time seeing a computer, and even more amazing, seeing themselves on screen while talking with kids halfway around the world.
The students asked each other thoughtful questions. When asked what they do for fun, the Busikwe children shared about fetching water, gathering firewood, helping in the garden, and preparing meals.
In return, the Vermont students turned their camera toward the snow so their new friends could see winter for the first time.
These exchanges are powerful learning moments for everyone involved. The U.S. students gain perspective and gratitude. The Ugandan children catch a glimpse of a world beyond their village.
Both discover how much they have in common, even with very different daily realities.
The day ended with refreshments and new school supplies for the children in Busikwe, making an already special experience even more meaningful.
Seeing these connections form and sharing them with students on both sides of the world is always a highlight for us. It reminds us how powerful connection can be.
With Gratitude,
Mary
