Graduation Day!

Our newest graduates!

This past Saturday was a day we had been waiting for.

We were finally able to gather and celebrate the 27 young women who completed their tailoring and hairdressing training at our Girls' Vocational Center in Buwudha village, Uganda.

The celebration happened later than planned because of the national elections, which brought much of the country to a standstill for several days. But in many ways, the wait made the day even sweeter.

From the very beginning, this celebration was about community and connection.

By 8:00 in the morning, some of the graduates were already at the center, cooking the meal that would be shared with everyone. The tailoring students had sewn beautiful bags to hold the supplies each girl would receive. They helped prepare the space, organize the certificates, and make sure everything was ready.

It was their day, and they poured themselves into it.

Hilda awarding Maria her Certificate of Achievement!  Christin giving her speech with Paven at her side! a big Thank You to Hilda, Aminsi, and Mr. Emma for putting this all together.

Each graduate received a Certificate of Achievement. They also received a starter package to help them move forward: fabric and sewing supplies for the tailoring graduates, and salon tools and products for the hairdressing graduates. These are not just gifts. They are the first building blocks of a new future.

There was food, cake, speeches, and dancing. In Uganda, speeches are an important part of any gathering.

Christin spoke on behalf of the graduates. She shared that because of the skills she has learned, she will now be able to support her son, Paven. We have watched Paven grow over the past two years while his mother faithfully attended classes. Her education is already changing his life.

Our tailoring instructor, Mr. Emmanuel, reminded the girls that while they have spent months measuring fabric, now they will measure their own success. He encouraged them to move forward with confidence in the skills they have worked so hard to gain.

We were honored to have Mr. Musenero from the Directorate of Industrial Training in Kamuli District attend and give remarks. He thanked our organization for investing in the lives of these young mothers and recognized the courage it took for them to complete their training.

The Kisoga Folk Dance group of young girls performed traditional dances, adding joy and celebration to the day.

One of the most beautiful moments was seeing our newest students helping with the preparations and ceremony. They watched the graduates receive their certificates and supplies. They saw what is possible. It gave them a picture of their own future.

The graduates are now looking ahead with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Several of the tailoring graduates have already met with our advisor, Hilda, to discuss forming a savings and business group. They want to pool their resources, save for their own sewing machines, and eventually rent workspace together. Their vision is bold, and we cannot wait to see how it grows.

It has been an incredible journey for these 27 young women. Each one has faced significant challenges. In rural Uganda, daily life revolves around survival tasks like collecting water, growing food, cooking, and finding ways to earn money.

For these girls, hardship has been a constant companion. And yet, they chose to show up. They chose to learn. They chose to push through fear and self-doubt and come to class day after day.

To see them standing proudly with certificates in hand, filled with hope, was deeply moving. We are so proud of them.

They have told us they will continue stopping by the center to encourage and mentor the new students. This group has become a sisterhood. It is hard for us to let them go.

None of this would have happened without you.

Because of your generosity, these young women received an education, practical skills, startup supplies, and a celebration that honored their hard work.

You made it possible for them not only to learn, but to be recognized and celebrated.

You have given them more than training.

You have given them dignity, confidence, and a path forward.

The change we have seen in them is remarkable. They now have marketable skills and a strong support network. They stand together, ready to build businesses, provide for their children, and shape their own futures.

Thank you for believing in them. Thank you for making this life-changing difference possible.

With deep gratitude,

Mary
