The Girls are Learning

Jamira is practicing her tailoring skills!

While we're enjoying these warm summer days, the girls at our Vocational Center in Buwudha Village are hard at work!

Since January, they've been learning tailoring, and I thought this week I'd give you a little peek inside their classes and show you what your support is making possible.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, Madam Sharifa, our tailoring instructor, focuses on lessons and theory. Then on Wednesdays and Thursdays, it's time to practice what they've learned. When the girls return on Monday, she reviews the previous week's lessons before moving on to something new.

And they are learning so much!

Tailoring instructor Madam Sharifa is teaching and the girls are so quick to learn!

This past week, the girls worked on tote bags, aprons, dresses, and school uniform shorts. They're learning the entire process, from taking someone's measurements and making a pattern to cutting the fabric and actually constructing the finished piece.

I have to say, I'm amazed watching them make a dress from start to finish!

They're also putting these new skills to work for another one of our programs. The girls are making the reusable pads and storage bags for our period kits, helping assemble the kits, and even working on ways to improve the pad design.

So the skills they're learning in class are already being put to use!

Resty, Mary, and Nyapendi are just three of the girls who are really excelling. (I've shared each of their stories in past emails.). When I think about where they started in January and what they can do now, the progress is incredible.

And it's not just their sewing skills that have changed.

Their confidence is growing, too.

These girls have a place where they can learn, practice, make mistakes, try again, and discover what they're capable of. They feel safe, seen, cared for, and supported, and for many of them, that is something they simply haven't experienced before.

This is what your support looks like in Buwudha!

A girl learning a skill. Gaining confidence. And beginning to see new possibilities for her future.

Thank you for making that possible. I can't wait to show you what they learn next!

With gratitude,

Mary

P.S. I wish you could see the girls at work in person! Watching them go from learning the basics in January to taking measurements, making patterns, and actually constructing clothing is pretty incredible. Thank you for giving them the chance to discover what they can do.
