A Place She Belongs

Meet Gift. This is her story as told to Hilda.

When Gift left school, she believed her future had already been decided.

At just 15 years old, she had dropped out in Primary Four. School had always been difficult. She struggled to keep up in class, walked a long distance every day, fetched water before leaving home, and often arrived late. Instead of encouragement, she faced punishment and criticism.

Eventually, she stopped going altogether.

Her mother assumed she would stay home, work where she could, and one day marry. It seemed like the only path available.

Then one ordinary day, everything changed.

While collecting water at the community borehole, Gift met one of our vocational center graduates. She shared how Children's Legacy Partnership Foundation was helping girls learn practical skills at no cost and encouraged Gift to apply.

When Gift asked her mother if she could try, the response was hesitant. "If it doesn't cost any money, you can go."

So she did.

In January, Gift enrolled in our Girls' Vocational Center to study hairdressing.

Today, we are already seeing a different young woman emerge.

The traditional classroom was never where Gift's talents would shine. But in the vocational center, she is thriving. Her instructors tell us she is quickly mastering new techniques, growing in confidence, and discovering abilities she never knew she had.

Gift reminds us that success doesn't always look the same.

Some girls simply need a different opportunity. A chance to learn by doing. A mentor who believes in them. A safe place where they are valued instead of judged.

That is exactly what our Girls' Vocational Center provides.

Every story we've shared over the past few months has been different, but they all point to the same truth. Without this center, many of these young women would have few options beyond early marriage, poverty, and dependence. Here, they are gaining practical skills that will allow them to earn an income, support themselves, and build a future with dignity.
